Kwong Beng, who used to be the whipping boy in the national training squad, stunned former international Mohd Roslin Hashim to set up a meeting with top seed Lee Chong Wei in today’s men’s singles final at the Pahang Sports Complex Indoor Stadium.
Yesterday, the 21-year-old showed great determination to beat Roslin 24-22, 21-19 in a 50-minute semi-final battle to reach his first final in a local Open tournament.
Kwong Beng trains under Misbun Sidek and has clearly benefited from sparring with Chong Wei and Roslin.
The shuttler from Perak was ecstatic over his breakthrough win.
“Finally, I will feature in the final of the Open tournament. The win over Roslin is really important for me,” said Kwong Beng. “This year, my coach (Misbun) told me to buck up because of my below-par performances. That has been the driving factor for me to do well.”
On his match against Chong Wei, he said: “It will be tough to beat him. He is a class above everyone else here.”
World No. 1 Chong Wei, who is set to continue his domination in the local circuit for the eighth consecutive year, was happy for Kwong Beng.
“It’s always good to see a youngster coming through the ranks. This is a good breakthrough for Kwong Beng and I hope it will give him a lot of confidence,” said Chong Wei.
In the men’s doubles, Fairuzizuan-Zakry beat former internationals Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng 21-16, 19-21, 21-13 to reach their first final in an Open tournament.
They will take on surprise finalists Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah, who dumped top seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong with a sensational 17-21, 21-19, 21-17 win in the other semi-final.
Zakry was happy that they finally got it right after failing to come good in local tournaments for the last two years.
“The irony is that we have never cleared the quarter-finals of the local tournaments for the last two years. Finally, we ended our jinx,” said Zakry.
“We are not surprised with Tan Fook-Wan Wah’s win over Koo-Tan. The veteran pair know everyone’s game by heart.”
