Sudirman Cup frustration pushes Hui Lin to prove herself

KUALA LUMPUR: Youngster Ng Hui Lin was included for the first time in the team for the recent Sudirman Cup world mixed team championship but she went to Guangzhou to warm the bench.
But the disappointment in not getting to play a single match has sparked a renewed hope for the mixed doubles shuttler to prove her worth in the national team.
Malaysia reached the semi-finals for the first time in the Division One of the Sudirman Cup to earn the bronze medal but Hui Lin was not selected to play in any of the group ties because of her lack of experience.
“I am happy that the team made the semi-finals. Although I did not get to play, it was a good experience to be in the team. I had to help and support the team in whatever way I could,” she said.
“The coaches had a good reason in not fielding me. I may be the youngest and the most inexperienced but I want to show that age is not and will not be an issue in the future. I will be out to prove myself. I just need a little more time.”
The bubbly Hui Lin added that the experience in Guangzhou had toughen her up.
“The disappointment in not getting to play has not affected me. Instead, it has made me stronger. It has only motivated me to work even harder to be a better player,” she said.
Pumped up with determination, one can expect Hui Lin to go for a double celebration in the Pahang Open, which began in Kuantan yesterday.
She will be out to keep her unbeaten run intact with her mixed doubles partner, Koo Kien Keat, on the local circuit. And in the absence of the country’s top pair, Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty, Hui Lin will also make an attempt to nail the women’s doubles title with Vivian Hoo.
But her main goals are to make breakthroughs in two upcoming Super Series tournaments — in Singapore (June 9-14) and Indonesia (June 16-21).
A good showing with Kien Keat in these two major tournaments will put her on the right track in the run-up to her first appearance in the World Championships in Hyderabad from Aug 10-16.
