Mew Choo and Eei Hui-Pei Tty storm into final in Johor Baru

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s women shuttlers enjoyed an all-time high when Wong Mew Choo and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty marched into the final of the Super Series Masters Finals in convincing fashions.

In the semi-finals yesterday, impressive defending champions Eei Hui-Pei Tty downed Thailand’s Duang Anong Aroonkesorn-V. Kunchala 21-15, 21-18 in just 32 minutes.

They will take on Denmark’s Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena-Frier Kristiansen for the title today. Just two days ago, the Malaysians had beaten the Danes in a group match.

Mew Choo also made it a grand day when she tamed Holland’s Yao Jie 21-10, 21-10 in 31 minutes to set-up a meeting with German Juliane Schenk.

It was an historic achievement because Malaysia women had never entered both the women’s singles and doubles final of an Open tournament before.

Although the field had considerably weakened due to the absence of top players from China and South Korea, Pei Tty said that it was still a proud moment for Malaysia.

“We have women finalists in both the singles and doubles events at the SEA Games and Commonwealth Games but not in an Open tournament,” said a delighted Pei Tty yesterday. “It is certainly a good day for the Malaysian women.”

Although they held the advantage against the Danes, Pei Tty said that they were bracing themselves for a tough time.

“These Danes are wounded after the defeat in the group and they will bounce back stronger. We know them too well,” said Pei Tty.

“They are strong in the head and will be out to intimidate us. We will be ready for them. It is our hope to win our second Masters Finals title,” she said.

Mew Choo, however, will have a tougher time to nail her first Masters Finals title against a spunky Schenk, who is growing to be a respected European challenger.

Schenk defeated Saina Nehwal of India 21-18, 21-18 to set-up the decider with Mew Choo.

National coach Misbun Sidek said that the final match today could go either way.

“The two players have met many times. But this is the first time that Mew Choo is meeting Schenk when she is on a high. At the world championships in August, Schenk had beaten China’s Wang Yihan,” he said.

“The German lass has established herself as a strong European player and she will be no pushover. She also plays in doubles and has variety in her game.

“But Mew Choo is quite determined too. She is playing without any pressure. The match will be evenly contested,” he added.
