NEW DELHI: Eight of the world’s top 20 shuttlers, including China’s Lin Dan and Indonesia’s Taufik Hidayat, are expected to feature in the US$150,000 Yonex-Sunrise Badminton Asian Championships here next month.
“This tournament is the world’s second biggest individual championships behind the world meet. It will be a top quality tournament and the world’s best players have confirmed their participation,” said V.K. Verma, president of Badminton Association of India.
However, Malaysia’s world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei, who won the All England title earlier this month, will not be competing in New Delhi.
Mohd Hafiz Hashim, the 2002 Commonwealth Games champion and 2009 India Open runner-up, is likely to lead the Malaysian charge.
In the women’s category, world champion Lu Lan of China, Hong Kong’s Zhou Mi and Indonesia’s Maria Kristin Yulianti have confirmed their entries.
India’s own rising star Saina Nehwal, ranked fifth in the world, will also be in the fray.
The fourth edition of the championships will be held at the newly-built Siri Fort Badminton Stadium in New Delhi from April 12-18. — Bernama
