BAM’s high-tech training centre close to fruition

PORT DICKSON: The Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) plan to have their own dream centre is back on track.
The president, Datuk Mohd Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, said yesterday that they had been allotted a new eight-acre land at Cochraine Road in Cheras to build a high-tech national training centre.
He said that there was a delay in the plan because they could not build the centre at the previous given plot of land in Taman Maluri.
“The government has finally given us a new land. Work will start on building our own training centre. This was decided during the executive meeting on Friday,” said Nadzmi.
He, however, said that the centre would not be ready before the 2012 London Olympics.
On the team’s preparation for the Thomas Cup Finals, Nadzmi said that the BAM would look into the delay in using the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil for the players.
The team will only get to use the stadium from May 3. As hosts, Malaysia could have used the venue as the training base for at least a month.
On why the BAM did not make early preparations to book the stadium, Nadzmi said: “There is always room for improvement. We will look into this.”
On whether there would be drastic changes in the BAM as far as office bearers are concerned after the Finals, Nadzmi said: “There will be a lot of changes. There will be a need to review and make changes if we want to make continuous improvement.”
