PETALING JAYA: Back-up women’s doubles shuttlers Woon Khe Wei-Vivian Hoo proved that they are ready to shoulder the challenge as the country’s second pair in the Uber Cup Finals.
Yesterday, the unseeded Khe Wei-Vivian reached their first final in an international tournament – the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in New Delhi.
The pair won a 64-minute marathon match against fourth seeds Savitree Amitapai-Vacharaporn Munkit of Thailand 18-21, 21-17, 21-14 in the semi-finals.
They will take on China’s Pan Pan-Tian Qing for the title today.
Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying then made it a grand day for Malaysia when they stormed into the mixed doubles final with a 12-21, 21-19, 21-15 win over Indonesians Devin Lahardi-Lilyana Natsir.
The day, however, certainly belonged to Khe Wei-Vivian.
“I just cannot express how I feel today. I was really exhausted after playing against the Indonesians yesterday (on Friday). My whole body was trembling during the opening game. I honestly thought that I could not recover,” said Khe Wei.
“But I kept telling myself not to give up. We encouraged each other and kept reminding ourselves that we could do it. Thankfully, we pulled it off.
“It feels great to enter our first final in an international tournament. This is my first year playing with Vivian and we are certainly hitting it off well.”
A day ago, the duo pulled off an upset victory by beating Meiliana Jauhari-Greysia Polii in the quarter-finals. The Indonesian pair had defeated top Malaysian pair Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty in the first round of the All-England last month.
The youngsters are expected to support Eei Hui-Pei Tty in the Finals, which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.
“Hopefully, I will be able to recover my form tomorrow (today). The odds may be against us but Vivian and I will be out to fight for every point,” said Khe Wei.
While it will be Khe Wei-Vivian’s first appearance in a final, Peng Soon-Liu Ying marched into their second international final yesterday.
The Vietnam Open runners-up will take on South Koreans Yoo Yeon-seong-Kim Min-jung for their first international title.
National coach Rosman Razak was happy with the steady progress shown by Peng Soon-Liu Ying.
“Peng Soon has been quite impressive in training lately and I am not surprised that he is in the final of the ABC meet. Hopefully, they can give their stronger opponents a good fight tomorrow (today),” said Rosman.
