THREE-TIME world champion Lin Dan describes his mentor Tang Hsienhu as his “grandpa”.
And thanks to the continuous wisdom and support from the wise old one, Lin Dan is set to rule the world of badminton for a long time.
Yesterday, Lin Dan gave another masterclass performance to overpower Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia 21-7, 21-14 in 43 minutes to give China a splendid first point.
My mentor: Lin Dan attributed his success to his coach Tang Hsienhu. Lin Dan, thus, completed his campaign in the Finals without dropping a single match and game.
On Friday, he had crushed world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in straight games.
He is certainly looking good to win his first Asian Games gold medal after letting it slip from his hands at the 2006 Doha Games when he lost to Taufik.
The Asian Games title is one of the few big ones still missing from Lin Dan's collection.
And Lin Dan has attributed his almost total domination to Hsienhu.
“He is my coach but I look up to him as my grandpa. He is a responsible coach and I am very lucky to have him as my coach. He has not been only guiding me in my techniques but also about life,” said Lin Dan, who went straight up to hug “The Thing” after his sensational win against Taufik yesterday.
On his win over Taufik, he said: “Both of us tried our best and we treated this match very seriously. We have a big responsibility to our countries and I am happy to have won it.”
Asked if he now considered himself the best player in the world, a modest Lin Dan replied: “No. I put in a lot of effort in what I do and, I think, there are other good players around too.”
Although Lin Dan's immediate task will be to compete in China's League, he has also set his mind on the Asiad gold.
“All the players in China will be focusing on the league. It will be competitive. I hope players like Chong Wei and Taufik will also take part,” he said.
“I have not won the Asian Games gold and I will be trying to win it. But it is difficult to be a perfect player and I will not be too disappointed if I don't win it. But you can expect the best from me there.”
He may not think of himself as a perfect player but, based on his exploits here, he certainly looks to be the most complete player on the planet.
