PROTON-BWF THOMAS & UBER CUP 2010 FINALS: China's title to lose!

China take on Indonesia for the fourth time in a Thomas Cup final on Sunday and look on course to notch their third win over their great rivals.
China won 5-4 in their first meeting in 1982 but Indonesia got their revenge when they won 3-2 in 1984. Two years later, it was China’s turn to win 3-2.

The glamour match is undoubtedly the battle between Lin Dan and Taufik Hidayat, a match-up former world No.1s who is the current and past holder of the world and Olympic titles. TC-D1-taufik-small

Lin showed the world just how far ahead he is of the rest of the world when he trounced Malaysia's world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei 21-18, 21-7 in Thursday’s semi-finals as China ran out 3-0 victors.

Taufik, meanwhile, could be playing in his final ever Thomas Cup tie and will be aiming to bow out in style by adding a winner's medal to the ones he earned in 2000 and 2002. Lin already has three winner's medal, after helping China to the 2004, 2006 and 2008 titles.

Lin will surely start as favourite but if Taufik can somehow raise his game, then it will be a great match to watch.

The first doubles too, could be a see-saw battle as China's Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng and Indonesia's Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan are evenly matched.

These two matches could go a long way towards deciding the outcome of this tie, as China's head coach Li Yongbo admitted.

'We will start as favourites but it is never easy to play Indonesia," he said.

"The first two matches are very crucial as it could decide the fate of the tie. Overall, I'm still confident as we have better depth in our squad."

Indonesia must also decide if they want to take a risk and field former Asian champion Sony Dwi Kuncoro in the second singles or stick with Simon Santoso.

Sony reinjured during Indonesia's match with India earlier in the week and has not played since. Simon has proven to be a capable replacement but on current form, neither look capable of stopping Chen Jin.

China also have the edge in the second doubles where Xu Chen-Guo Zhendong are slightly ahead of Nova Widianto-Alvent Yulianto Chandra while in the last singles, Bao Chunlai is way ahead of Dyonisius Hayom Rumbaka.

Indonesia team manager Yakob Rusdianto said: "Obviously we are aiming to win the Cup but we have to acknowledge that China are the favourites. Much will depend on how we start the final and if we can get off to a winning start, we will stand a good chance."

The final at Putra Stadium will start at 2pm.
