NATIONAL doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky has his reservations about team unity among the Indonesian shuttlers for the Thomas Cup Finals.
It is the first time that the majority of the team are independent players.
“Team unity is important to be successful in the Finals. I am not sure whether they are united or divided. I guess, we will have to wait and see how they fare in this Finals,” said Rexy.
The independent players in the side are Taufik Hidayat and doubles pairs Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan and Alven Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan. Those under the wings of the All-Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) are Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Simon Santoso, Dionysius Hayom Rumbaka and Nova Widianto-Mohd Ahsan.
Rexy said that back in the early 90s, there was no question of the Indonesian team's unity. “We did everything together and there was a great bond among all of us. And probably, that was why we were able to win the Finals all the time,” he said.
