KUALA LUMPUR: The Sideks are used to adversities.
And national singles coach Misbun Sidek is confident that nothing would stop them from giving their best for the country despite concerns over the misfortunes that had struck younger brother Rashid and his family.
National singles chief coach Rashid and his family have been confirmed to have contracted H1N1 and they are now under quarantine.
This comes just a week before the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals begin on Sunday in Bukit Jalil.
The National Sports Institute (NSI) are taking all measures to ensure that all the players in the Thomas and Uber Cup squads are cleared from the illness.
It is not sure when Rashid will be out of quarantine but the NSI director-general, Dr Ramlan Aziz, said that they were keeping a close watch on the players and would conduct routine checks on them every morning.
Misbun said that it was unfortunate that Rashid had fallen ill but it would not throw a damper in the team’s preparation for the Finals.
“This is not something new to the Sideks. We have gone through hardships and we always come out of them stronger. The most important thing is to be there for each other,” he said.
Misbun lost his child prior to the 1996 Atlanta Olympics but he put his grief aside and made the trip to assist Rashid to achieve glory for the country. Rashid bagged the bronze medal. Last year, he still gave undivided attention to training although his wife was sick due to kidney failure.
Despite difficult situations and torn between his responsibilities, he still accompanied world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei to the World Championships in Hyderabad.
“The Sideks are tough people. We will continue to do what we know best right now – to coach and prepare the players to achieve their best in the Finals,” said Misbun.
