IT WAS a day of mixed fortunes for world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei yesterday.
Yesterday, his coach, Misbun Sidek, did not turn up for training because he had to attend to his wife and two children, who were admitted to hospital for suspected virus H1N1.
Over the last few days, Misbun’s younger brother Rashid and his family were confirmed with the virus and had to be quarantined.
Chong Wei said that he would not let it affect his preparations for the Thomas Cup Finals.
“My coach has to be with his family right now. He is also not feeling well and I hope he will get well soon,” said Chong Wei.
The wife of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed turned up to give some encouragement to the squads for the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals.
“She was the patron when Malaysia last won the Thomas Cup in 1992. Badminton is always special to her and we are so happy that she is here to fan the fire among the players. She wished us the best of luck and we certainly need that in our bid to regain the Cup,” said Chong Wei.
Meanwhile, the National Sports Institute (NSI) director general, Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz, said that the results of all the tests done on the players for the virus on Monday turned out to be negative.
Uber Cupper Wong Mew Choo is down with flu but it is not related to the virus.
“We will continue to monitor the progress of the players and coaches and get them to follow all precautionary measures,” he said.
