Sony rubbishes talk of discord in Indonesian team

SONY Dwi Kuncoro has brushed off claims that the Indonesian squad for the Thomas Cup Finals are divided into two camps.
There was a recent report that the relationship between the independents and the players from the All Indonesia Badminton Association (PBSI) players was not cordial.
“We have no problems. There are so many good things about the team.
“We are feeling positive and confident about the Thomas Cup. This story is not good for us. We have been training as a team for over a month.
“The independent players also joined us but not on a daily basis, maybe two or three days a week.
“PBSI did not organise a team-building camp for the players. But on this you will have to ask the association.
“Training, however, is sufficient. What is more important now is that the whole team are here and we have a mission ahead of us. It is how the team perform that counts.
“We are representing Indonesia and of course, we will play as a team to lift the title. Personally, I hope to end our drought in Kuala Lumpur,” said world number 11 Sony, who made his Thomas Cup debut in the 2004 edition in Jakarta.
Sony, who played first singles in the last Finals in Jakarta two years ago, is the second ranked singles player behind former Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat.
The third singles player is Simon Santoso.
The players under the PBSI banner are Sony, Simon, youngster Dyonisius Hayom Rumbaka and reserve pair Nova Widianto-Mohd Ahsan.
The independent players are Taufik and doubles pairs Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan and Alvent Yulianto-Hendra Aprida Gunawan.
Indonesia trained for the first time at the Putra Stadium yesterday but the normally jovial head coach Christian Hadinata declined to comment about his team's chances.
Indonesia last won the Cup in 2002 in Guangzhou. They beat Malaysia 3-2 in the final.
