PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Wong Mew Choo and the men’s doubles pair of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif advanced to championship title matches in the India Open in Chennai yesterday.
Second seed Mew Choo stopped Indonesian youngster Linda Weni Fanetri 22-20, 21-17 in 39 minutes to reach a first final appearance on the international stage since winning the Super Series Masters Finals in Johor Baru last December.
The 28-year-old Malaysian will take on top seed Saina Nehwal of India for the title and the match could be seen as an early preview of a showdown for the Commonwealth Games gold medal in New Delhi in October.
In the men’s doubles, top seeds Mohd Fairuzizuan-Mohd Zakry powered past Triyachart Chayut-Danny Bawa Chrisnanta of Singapore in the semi-finals, winning 21-8, 21-17.
It will be the first Open final appearance for the struggling pair since they won back-to-back titles in Singapore and Indonesia two years ago.
Fairuzizuan-Zakry will be up against second seeds Rupesh Kumar-Thomas Sanave of India today and coach Rosman Razak is hoping that the duo will rise to the occasion.
“Their matches thus far have been against less formidable opponents as the top pairs have opted out of this tournament,” said Rosman in telephone interview from Chennai.
“But I am happy that they have performed to expectations as the top seeds. I hope they will win the title to show us that they still have the competitive edge in them.”
There was disappointment for India when top seed Chetan Anand crashed out to Yunus Alamsyah in the men’s singles semi-finals. The unseeded Indonesian won the match 16-21, 21-12, 21-13 in 51 minutes.
