Fairuzizuan-Zakry need successful run to win places in the Asiad squad

PETALING JAYA: Struggling doubles pair Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif kept alive their hopes of winning places in the squad for the Guangzhou Asian Games when they advanced to the quarter-finals of the India Open in Chennai yesterday.
But it was the end of the road for back-up pair Hoon Thien How-Ong Soon Hock.
Fairuzizuan-Zakry, the national No. 2 behind Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, defeated K.S. Hersen-James Jayan of India 21-9, 21-12 in a second-round.
The top seeded Malaysian will take on another Indian pair S. Krishna-Manual Vineth for a place in the semi-finals.
Third seeds Thien How-Soon Hock crashed to second-round defeat by Indonesians Yuris Wirawan Afiat-Rendy Sugiarto. The duo, who are also chasing places in the team to the Asian Games in November, did themselves no favour in a 21-16, 19-21, 14-21 defeat.
Fairuzizuan-Zakry, who will not get to compete in the Super Series tournaments in Singapore and Indonesia Opens later this month, are seeking a successful run in the India Open this week to somehow convince the coaches that they still have it in them to challenge for honours and should be retained as a pair.
The world’s top pairs are skipping the Grand Prix gold tournament and the Malaysian pair have a good opportunity to take the title.
National back-up men’s singles player Tan Chun Seang beat eighth seed Ajay Jayaram of India 16-21, 21-16, 21-18 last night to qualify for the quarter-finals.
Chun Seang had defeated Indian players Antony Joy 21-11, 21-12 and Praneeth B. Sai 21-9, 21-15 in the first and second round respectively.
