Chinesei
Taipei, once again, flexed their muscles in the doubles, zooming in on
three titles while Zhu Lin stayed on track to win her second consecutive
title at the YONEX OCBC US Open Grand Prix Gold tournament in
California on Friday.
Lee Sheng
Mu-Chien Yu Chin started the ball rolling with a superb win over top
seeds Robert Mateusiak-Nadiezda Zieba in the mixed doubles with a 21-19,
21-15 win.
With Sheng Mu a steadying influence at the
back, Yu Chin took control of the net to force the Polish pair into
committing too many errors.
In the final, Sheng Mu-Yu Chin will take
on Germany’s Michael Fuchs-Birgit Overzier who denied an all-Chinese
Taipei final with a hard fought 21-18, 18-21, 21-13 win over Chen Hung
Ling-Cheng Wen Hsing.
But Chinese Taipei were not to be denied
gold and silver in the men’s doubles as Sheng Mu-Fang Chieh Min will
cross swords with compatriots Chen Hung Ling-Lin Yu Lang.
Sheng Mu-Chieh Min, currently on a hot
streak with three titles in the last two months, beat Korea’s Kim Ki
Jung-Shin Baek Cheol 13-21, 21-14, 21-18 to enter the final.
Enjoying a career high ranking of eighth
in the world, Sheng Mu-Chieh Min have won the Singapore Open Super
Series, Indonesia Open Super Series and last week’s Canada Open. Hung
Ling-Yu Lang, meanwhile, beat local favourites and former world
champions Howard Bach-Tony Gunawan in a three game thriller that could
have gone either way.
The Chinese Taipei pair eventually won
20-22, 24-22, 21-16.
Not to be outdone, Chen Wen Hsing-Chien Yu
Chin also made it to the final with a clinical performance that saw
them defeating Germany’s Birgit Overzier-Sandra Marinello
21-12, 21-5.
At the Canada Open last week, Chinese
Taipei pairs won all three doubles titles and out to stop them will be
Japan’s Rie Eto-Yu Wakita who upset Singapore Open champions Shinta
Mulia Sari-Yao Lei 14-21, 21-13, 21-16.
In the women’s singles, Zhu Lin, who won
in Canada, defeated Juliane Schenk 21-23, 21-17, 21-18 to qualify for
the final against Netherlands’ Judith Meulendijks. The Dutch player beat
Japan’s Shizuka Uchida 21-18, 21-11.
And in the men’s singles, England’s Rajiv
Ouseph and France’s Brice Leverdez will lock horns to decide the winner.
