Misbun gets to stay home while Rexy can’t go due to visa problems

KUALA LUMPUR: An established coach got more than what he wanted. Another did not get what he asked for.
It was announced yesterday that singles coach Misbun Sidek and doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky will not be joining the world championship-bound players for a 10-day centralised training stint at the Bath University in England.
The team will be leaving for London tomorrow before heading to Paris for the championships scheduled for Aug 23-29.
Misbun cited personal reasons for skipping the centralised training. And an additional request to make an exception for Lee Chong Wei to train at home was also granted.
The decisions were made during a meeting among the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM), National Sports Council (NSC) and National Sports Institute (NSI) in Bukit Jalil.
It is learnt that Misbun preferred to be close to his sick wife and at the same time coach Chong Wei to hit peak form at the world championships.
But there had been speculations that Misbun did not like the idea of the stint in Bath, which was mooted by the NSI, and agreed upon several weeks ago.
The BAM general manager, Kenny Goh, said: “We have asked Misbun to write an official letter on the matter after meeting him today. But in principle, we have agreed to his request to coach Chong Wei at home.”
On how the BAM would handle the matter if others also put in “special requests” to stay away from the stint in Bath, Kenny said: “We have no knowledge of anyone else wanting to make such a request. If they do, it will be treated as a case by case matter.”
Meanwhile, Indonesian Rexy was looking forward to be with the players in Bath but he has failed to obtain a visa and will have to join the team in Paris next week.
For the stint in Bath, Pang Cheh Chang and Jeremy Gan will take charge of the doubles players.
The players leaving as scheduled tomorrow are Mohd Hafiz Hashim, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, Wong Mew Choo, Lydia Cheah and Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying.
Also in the travelling party are sparring players Chan Kwong Beng, Lok Chong Chieh, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Lim Khim Wah, Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong; and coaches Hendrawan and Rashid Sidek.
