Kien Keat named flag bearer of the Malaysian contingent

KUALA LUMPUR: It is certainly turning out to be a very memorable year for doubles specialist Koo Kien Keat.
Yesterday, the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) coaching and training committee endorsed his selection by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and the National Sports Council (NSC) as the flag bearer of the Malaysian contingent for the Asian Games.
The committee chairman, Ng Chi Chai, who is also the BAM secretary, said that Kien Keat’s selection was a good recognition for the association.
“We are pleased that Kien Keat has been given the honour to lead the Malaysian contingent in the opening ceremony on Nov 12 and we have accepted it. It has been some time that a prominent figure from badminton was given this mandate,” said Chin Chai.
Well done: Koo Kien Keat’s selection as the flag bearer for the Asiad opening ceremony is also a recognition for BAM.
Just recently, Kien Keat turned on the power to become one of the most successful players in the Commonwealth Games when he bagged three gold medals (mixed team, men’s and mixed doubles).
This year together with Tan Boon Heong, Kien Keat also emerged as the runners-up in the world championships in Paris.
The BAM are also hoping that the good news will boost and motivate Kien Keat in the defence of the Asiad men’s doubles title with Boon Heong in Guangzhou.
Yesterday, the BAM coaching and training committee also gave a new lease of life to 21-year-old Lim Fang Yang.
The former Asian Junior semi-finalist, who was dropped from the national team during the recent BAM’s structural change, was given six months to prove himself.
“We have reinstated him in the back-up squad under Hendrawan,” said Chin Chai.
However, Chin Chai said that a request by national coach Misbun Sidek to keep his son, Misbun Ramdan, in the elite team had been shot down. Ramdan will remain under the charge of Hendrawan.
Chin Chai also said that there would also be several changes in the coaching set-up and the request by Misbun and Lee Chong Wei to keep Teh Seu Bock in the elite squad had been entertained.
“Seu Bock will not have to go to the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) as planned. Chong Wei wants Seu Bock to be involved in his preparations for the 2012 London Olympics and we agreed to it after much discussion,” he said.
