Zakry-Hoon book spot in the main draw

PETALING JAYA: Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How overcame a slow start yesterday to reach the main draw of the men's doubles competition of the South Korea Open.
They trailed 8-13 at one stage in a second-round match of the qualifying tournament against Singaporeans Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Hendra Wijaya but pulled themselves up to win 21-18, 21-18 in 33 minutes.
In the first round, they beat another Singapore pair, Terry Yeo Zhao Jiang-Liu Yi, 22-20, 21-18.
In the first round of the tournament proper today, Zakry-Thien How will take on Japan's Naoki Kawamae-Shoji Sato, who defeated them in the quarter-finals at the Malaysia Open last Friday.
Independent Malaysian pair Chan Chong Ming-Lee Wan Wah failed to make the tournament proper. They were beaten 14-21, 18-21, 16-21 by Chinese youngsters Hong Wei-Shen Ye in the first round of the qualifying tournament.
Hong Wei-Shen Ye did well at the Malaysia Open when they dumped defending champions Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong in the opening round.
In the men's singles, young Chinese Wang Zhengming made it to the main draw after beating Denmark's Hans Kristian Vittinghus of Denmark 9-21, 21-17, 21-14 in the second round qualifier to set up a match today against Kazushi Yamada of Japan.
