Badminton: Different fortunes for Chun Seang, Kwong Beng

KUALA TERENGGANU: It was business as usual for most of the shuttlers despite a spate of late withdrawals when the National Circuit Grand Prix Finals began at Stadium Negri here yesterday.
Men’s and women’s singles shuttlers Liew Daren and Lydia Cheah respectively withdrew before the start of the championships citing injuries. This forced the organisers to make minor changes to the groupings.
Chan Kwong Beng, one of the few shuttlers expected to be in the running to face top seed Lee Chong Wei in the men’s singles final, suffered a horrendous opening night – having to retire from his first Group D match against Mohd Arif Abdul Latif with a back injury.
Kwong Beng won the first game 21-19 but Mohd Arif fought back to win the next game 21-9. Then, in the decider, Kwong Beng was forced to retire with the back injury while trailing 13-17.
“It (the back injury) was painful. I didn’t want to force myself for fear that it might worsen,” said a dejected Kwong Beng.
Chong Wei, meanwhile, was in a class on his own in Group A, notching easy wins over back-up shuttlers Kuan Kam Chung (21-13, 21-15) and Loh Wei Sheng (21-14, 21-10).
Back-up shuttler Mohd Syawal Ismail also had two wins to his name in Group A after slogging to beat Kam Chung 26-24, 21-14 and Wei Sheng 22-20, 21-19.
In Group B, Tan Chun Seang put himself in a comfortable position at the top of the group with two wins as well.
Chun Seang, who only returned to training about three weeks ago after suffering from an ankle injury, brushed aside Tan Aik Quan 21-10, 21-11 before seeing off Zulfadli Zulkifli 21-16, 21-18.
“I just want to play and get my touch back after my injury,” said Chun Seang, who is also one of the favourites to reach the final.
