Four Malaysian pairs through to quarter-finals

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian back-up shuttlers Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Khoo Chung Chiat continued their gallant run in the Macau Open yesterday, fighting back from a game down to reach the quarter-finals.
Mohd Razif-Chung Chiat set up a quarter-final meeting with compatriots Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah after beating Thailand's Nattaphon Narkthong-Patipat Chalardchaleam 12-21, 21-11, 21-13 in the second round.
Two other Malaysian pairs – second seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui – also made it to the last eight. It is the second time that Malaysia will have four pairs in the quarter-finals of a tournament this year. Malaysia also had four pairs in the last eight at the Asian Badminton Championships in Johor Baru in April.
Yesterday, Kien Keat-Boon Heong tamed Hong Kong's Alroy Tanama Putra-Wai Ho Hui 21-18, 21-9 to set-up a mouth-watering clash with South Koreans Jung Jae-sung-Lee Yong-dae.
Teik Chai-Woon Fui saved five match points in the second game to upset Singaporeans Hendri Kurniawan Saputra-Hendra Wijaya 19-21, 24-22, 22-20 in a 74-minute battle. They will play reigning world champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia next.
Said Teik Chai in a telephone interview from Macau:
“Woon Fui and I have not played Markis-Hendra before. The odds are against us but we will be out to give them a run for their money.”
In the men's singles, Mohd Roslin Hashim was the first to book a place in the last eight. He defeated Thailand's S. Poompat to set up a meeting with Olympic champion Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia.
Wong Choong Hann overcame Vietnam’s Nguyen Tien Minh 27-25, 21-11 to book his quarter-final berth. He will play Bao Chunlai of China next.
Yeoh Kay Bin, however, was shown the exit when he went down 15-21, 13-21 to South Korean Park Sung-hwan.
