Omission of Taufik a clever Cup ploy
News 9:30 AM
THE absence of defending champion Taufik Hidayat may have robbed the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) of some of the glitter but Indonesia are happy to have played their cards right.
By not fielding Taufik, Indonesia can now be rest assured that the Olympic champion will play as the second singles for them in the Thomas Cup Finals, which will be held in Jakarta from May 11-18.
In last week’s world rankings, Sony Dwi Kuncoro overtook Taufik as Indonesia’s top player when he moved into the sixth spot – one rung above Taufik.
And, after the ABC, Sony will be confirmed as Indonesia’s first singles and Taufik as the second.
As the second singles, Indonesia can be virtually assured of winning a point through the talented Taufik.
His other opponents at second singles in the Finals will be Malaysia’s Wong Choong Hann, Denmark’s Peter Gade-Christensen, South Korean Park Sung-hwan and China’s Bao Chunlai.
