Boon Heong plays down injury scare

KUALA LUMPUR: Doubles shuttler Tan Boon Heong has allayed fears of a recurrence of a heel injury in his preparation for the Thomas Cup Finals.

He was not at his best yesterday, partnering Koo Kien Keat for a match in a simulation tie against Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How, but insisted that it was not due to the pain on his heel. They won the match 18-21, 21-12, 21-13.

Boon Heong-Kien Keat, who are the second ranked pair in the team for the Finals, will be leaving with their team-mates for Jakarta today.

The lanky Boon Heong said that he would give his best for Malaysia in the Finals.

“I was affected by the heel injury (on the left leg) during the ABC (Asian Championships) but it is not a problem now. Sometimes, I get the pain. But no, it is not affecting my game,” he said.

“Today, I just did not play too well. But I should do better. Whether injured or not, the team can be rest assured that I will go all out to give my best in the Finals. I will give my best so that our team’s chances will not be affected because of me.”

Coach Rexy Mainaky said that Boon Heong has had proper treatment for the injury.

“It was treated immediately after the ABC. There is nothing to worry about Boon Heong,” he said.
