his win over Kenichi Tago of Japan during the
quarter-finals Wednesday.
SKIPPER Wong Choong Hann takes no offence in being considered a weak link in the Malaysian team.
Yesterday, Japan made an attempt to steal a point from Malaysia in the singles when they replaced the second ranked Sho Sasaki with former Asian junior champion Kenichi Tago to play the match against Choong Hann.
And Choong Hann fended off a late comeback from the youngster to win 21-13, 21-18 to seal the tie for Malaysia in the third match.
“I was surprised with Japan's brave move to put Kenichi at second singles. They were hoping for a junior to give me a hard time,” said Choong Hann.
“Kenichi did make it difficult for me in the second game but I was more experienced.
“I think more than that, I was determined. I do not plan to lose any match in my last outing in the Thomas Cup Finals.
“The others teams can say and think anything they like about me but they cannot expect to take me lightly here.”
However, Choong Hann gave credit to Kenichi for giving him a good run.
“I think, he is a bright boy. He has good tactics and a lot of talent. He is one of the players to look out for in future,” he said.
It's now for the showdown against China for a place in the final and Choong Hann said: “We have a one-day break. The coaches will work on getting a right strategy to topple them and the players will be ready for the battle.”
