Badminton: Early scare from Japanese

KUALA LUMPUR: Top seed Lee Chong Wei staved off a challenge from Japan’s Sho Sasaki to reach the second round of the Singapore Open badminton championships at the Singapore Indoor Stadium yesterday.
The Malaysian took 55 minutes to win the match 21-11, 20-22, 21-8 and he will play against team-mate Wong Choong Hann today for a place in the quarter-finals.
Veteran Choong Hann advanced with a 24-22, 21-19 in 46th minutes over KLRC Bhd's Lee Tsuen Seng.
In another all-Malaysian encounter, qualifier Kuan Beng Hong defeated Nusa Mahsuri's Mohd Roslin Hashim 21-15, 21-18 and he will play against eighth seed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand in the second round today.
Another KLRC Bhd entry, Sairul Amar Ayob, cleared the first round hurdle – defeating Denmark’s Hans Kristian Vittinghus 21-14, 21-15 in 27 minutes. He will play against India's Anup Sridhar for a place in the quarter-finals.
Two other Malaysians Tan Chun Seang and Yeoh Kay Bin ended as first-round casualties.
Qualifier Chun Seang gave fourth seed Peter Gade-Christensen of Denmark a good run before going down 10-21, 21-17, 19-21 in 56 minutes.
Kay Bin lost 7-21, 13-21 to seventh seed Chen Yu of China.
In the men’s doubles, three Malaysian pairs advanced to the second round. Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng were made to slog for 53 minutes before they got the better of team-mates Chan Peng Soon-Kim Khim Wah 21-15, 23-25, 21-17.
Gan Teik Chai-Lin Woon Fui beat Singapore's Danny Bawa Chrisnanta-Chayut Triyachart 22-20, 21-18 while Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Tan Wee Kiong defeated Denmark’s Rasmus Bonde-Kasper Henriksen 21-14, 10-21, 23-21 in 42 minutes.
In the women’s singles, national number one and fourth seed Wong Mew Choo defeated South Korean Lee Yun-hwa 21-10, 17-21, 21-14. But the challenge of Julia Wong ended in a 14-21, 8-21 defeat by third seed Wang Chen of Hong Kong.
The top national women's doubles pair, Chin Eei-hui-Wong Pei Tty, were also first-round casualities. The seventh seeded Malaysians were beaten 19-21, 24-22, 11-21 by South Koreans Ha Jung-eun and Kim Min-jung.
Another Malaysian pair, Fong Chew Yen-Mooi Hing Yau, came back from a game down to beat Singapore's Liu Fan Frances-New Yu Yan Vanessa 13-21, 21-13, 21-13.
