KUALA LUMPUR: Two titles are assured for the host country after the semi-finals of the Malaysia International Challenge concluded at the Likas Sports Complex in Kota Kinabalu last night.
Top seed Chong Wei Feng halted the impressive run of Indonesia’s 11th seed Andreas Adityawarman with a come-from-behind 18-21, 21-13, 21-12 win yesterday.
Wei Feng’s bid for his first international Open title, however, won’t be easy as he faces compatriot Kuan Beng Hong, who is also looking for his first title for the year.
The second-seeded Beng Hong looks to be in better shape, taking just 30 minutes to beat South Korean Ryo Ye-wook 21-11, 21-11.
It will also be a clash between the two top seeds from Malaysia in the men’s doubles final.
Gan Teik Chai-Ong Jian Guo and Lin Woon Fui-Goh Wei Shem, the first and second seeds, beat Narkthong Nuttaphon-Patiphat Chalardchalaem of Thailand 21-11, 16-21, 21-14 and Hashimoto Hirokatsu-Yone Takao of Japan 20-22, 21-18 respectively.
There is also hope of a third title for Malaysia through the mixed doubles pair of Mohd Lufti Zaim Abdul Khalid-Lim Yin Loo.
Mohd Lufti-Yin Loo, the fourth seeds, beat team-mates Mak Hee Chun-Vivian Hoo 21-18, 16-21, 21-18 in the semi-finals yesterday.
Their final foes will be Singapore’s Chrisnanta Danny Bawa-Vanessa Neo, who beat Malaysia’s Teo Kok Siang-Sannatasah Saniru 21-17, 21-13.
