Badminton: Assistants gained valuable experience at the Finals

KOTA KINABALU: The absence of national coaches Misbun Sidek and Rexy Mainaky from the Super Series Masters Finals gave their assistants great opportunities to gain valuable experience.

Misbun returned home ill from a trip to Mecca and Teh Seu Bok came in to take charge of the singles shuttlers.

Doubles’ chief Rexy had to attend to some personal matters and Pang Cheh Chang stood in for him.

And there was delight for Seu Bok too in Lee Chong Wei’s victory in the men’s singles while it was double joy for Cheh Chang from the successes of Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Wong Pei Tty-Chin Eei Hui in the men’s and women’s doubles respectively.

Seu Bok, who has been assigned to groom women’s singles shuttlers Julia Wong and Lydia Cheah, said that the trip to Kota Kinabalu was a learning experience for him.

“I have kept constant communication with Misbun throughout this tournament and Chong Wei knows what needed to be done here,” said Seu Bok.

“Still, it gave me the opportunity to learn a few things and how to handle situations in a big event like this. It will only help me become a better coach.”

Cheh Chang said that the arrangements showed unity among the coaches in the national set-up.

Although Rexy handles the elite pairs, he has given Cheh Chang, Rosman Razak and Chang Kim Wai the opportunities to handle the players in several tournaments this year.

“Besides focusing on the players, Rexy also wants to improve the standard of the local coaches. The coaches in the national set-up work as a team even though we train different sets of players,” said Cheh Chang, who will take charge of the back-up squad’s women’s doubles players.

“For me, I get opportunities to give my input.

“What I learnt most is to be patient and to never give up on players. After struggling for a year, Koo and Tan are back at their best. And that is a joy to every coach.”
