Lin Dan keen to promote badminton globally

SHANGHAI: Chinese badminton superstar Lin Dan may have won all the major tournaments but he is still motivated to do more in promoting the game.

“I feel that although badminton is very popular in Asia and doing quite well in Britain, the sport is still not well received in Euope and the US. I hope I can do my part to promote it so that it can be as popular as the NBA,” he was quoted by Xinhua agency as saying on Sunday.

“I think this is what impact we can make as a player, and not just think of personal achievements.”

World No. 2 Lin Dan captured the All-England title for the fourth time in six successive finals in Birminham on Sunday. He was also the champion in 2004, 2006 and 2007.

His other major achievements include winning the world championships twice (2006 and 2007), the 2007 Beijing Olympics gold medal and helping China win the Thomas Cup (world men’s team championship) thrice.

On his win over World No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in Sunday’s final, he said he was in cruise control in the first set until he let his lead slipped at 10-6 and 16-15 as he did not handle the situation well.

“I was too anxious and he seized his chances. But overall, I was calm and just hoped to win each point at a time,” he said.
