Razif and Woon aim to justify their inclusion in world meet

KUALA LUMPUR: The recent inclusion of Mohd Razif Abdul Latif-Woon Khe Wei in the squad for the World Championships has given the mixed doubles pair extra motivation to do well in the Pahang Open.

The duo will be out to justify their status as the best back-up mixed pair in the opening leg of the national Grand Prix circuit, which will be held in Kuantan from May 26-29.

The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have named Razif-Khe Wei for the World Championships in Hyderabad from Aug 10-16. They were selected as replacements for Wong Pei Tty-Lim Khim Wah.

The senior-junior combination of Pei Tty-Khim Wah qualified for the championships on merit but they will not be fielded because they no longer feature as a pair.

The other Malaysian mixed doubles pair who made it to the championships on merit are Koo Kien Keat-Ng Hui Lin.

Razif said that they hoped to get off to a good start in their first local tournament together.

“It will be great if we can achieve good results in our debut. It will put us on the right track in our preparation for the World Championships,” said the 24-year-old Razif.

“We will also be competing in the Singapore and Indonesian Opens. We are grateful to our coaches for having faith in us.

“We hope to do well in every tournament. It will be great to upset one big name in every tournament,” added Razif.

In the Pahang Open, Razif-Khe Wei, who are ranked 78th in the world, have been drawn in the same half as second seeds Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Ong Jian Guo-Sabrina Chong. They are tipped to play against Jian Guo-Sabrina in the quarter-finals.

The other half of the draw has top seeds Kien Keat-Hui Lin, Pei Tty-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari and back-up pair Khim Wah-Ng Paou Ling.
