PETALING JAYA: Thai ace Boonsak Ponsana is perfectly poised to bag his second Singapore Open title after staging a superb fightback to beat South Korea’s Park Sung-hwan in the men’s singles semi-final yesterday.
But the Thai, who won the Singapore Open in 2007, clawed his way back for a 19-21, 21-18, 21-13 win that nicely sets him up with a chance to secure his first Open title of the year.
Boonsak’s last victory came in the India Open in April last year.
Boonsak will face China’s Bao Chunlai in today’s final after the Chinese ace downed compatriot Chen Jin 21-19, 21-18 in the other semi-final.
In the women’s singles, China’s former world champion Xie Xingfang is one match away from clinching her first Super Series title for the year when she came back from a game down to beat compatriot Jiang Yanjiao 17-21, 21-10, 21-19 in the semi-final.
Xingfang will take on top seed Zhou Mi of Hong Kong in the final.
Zhou Mi chalked up a 22-20, 21-18 win over world junior champion Wang Lin of China in the other semi-final.
The mixed doubles semi-finals threw up two shocking results when Zheng Bo-Ma Jin and Xie Zhongbo-Zhang Yawen made it an all-Chinese final by eliminating the top two seeds.
