KUALA LUMPUR: English pair Anthony Clark-Nathan Robertson showed that they will be a big threat at the world championships in Hyderabad in August when they ended their international title drought in the Singapore Open yesterday.
The duo, who are slowly making their way up as an established pair again after a two-year lapse, blew away Olympic champions Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia 21-12, 21-11 in just 26 minutes to win their first Open title.
Clark-Robertson had been playing together since 2002 before they parted company for two years from 2006.
In the men’s singles, China’s Bao Chunlai had to go the distance against a gritty Boonsak Ponsana before prevailing with a hard-fought 21-19, 16-21, 21-15 win in 63 minutes.
It was Chunlai’s third title this year after his successes in the German Open and Asian Championships.
His consistent performances this year indicated that Chunlai is no longer bugged by a nagging knee injury and he too would be among the top contenders for the world championship crown.
