BINGO BONANZA PHILIPPINE OPEN - China win four titles, Zhou Mi stunned

The Chinese, despite sending mostly back-up players, won four of the five titles at stake with only the men’s doubles title to elude them.

In the men’s singles, Chen Long, runner-up at the Yonex-Sunrise India Open, Asian Championships and Yonex-Sunrise Malaysia Open GP Gold last week, took only 28 minutes to win the men’s singles crown with a 21-13, 21-6 win over Hu Yun of Hong Kong.The win, and his consistent performance in several tournaments this year, will definitely see the 2007 World Junior champion move up on the world rankings ladder.

However, Hong Kong’s Zhou Mi will rue the fact that she let slip a golden opportunity to win another title after she was stopped by China’s Wang Xin after almost one hour of play. Wang Xin, runner-up in Malaysia last week, took the first game 21-10 but Zhou Mi stormed back to take the second game 21-12. However, in the third game, the Chinese player stepped up the pace, and more importantly, kept her composure to win the final game 23-21.

China’s two other titles came via the all-China affair in the mixed doubles and Gao Ling-Wei Yili in the women’s doubles.

Gao Ling-Wei Yili, both who have retired from the national team, were too good for Indonesia’s Shendy Puspa Irawati-Meiliana Jauhari and won in straight games, 21-11, 21-11.

In the mixed doubles, Zhang Nan-Lu Lu beat Chen Zhiben-Zhang Jinkang 22-20, 21-19.

Indonesia took the men’s doubles title, thanks to an all-Indonesia final with Mohammad Ahsan-Bona Septano taking on Alvent Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan in the last match of the day.

Mohammad-Bona won the title but needed three games to seal the title. Mohammad-Bona dropped the first game 21-10 but came charging back to win the next two games 21-14, 21-17.
