Choong Hann makes last eight

PETALING JAYA: Seasoned campaigner Wong Choong Hann brushed aside South Korea’s Rho Ye-wook 21-12, 21-18 to march into the men’s singles quarter-finals of the Thailand Open in Bangkok yesterday.

The third round win sees Choong Hann setting up a last-eight date with Hong Kong’s Hu Yun.

Choong Hann, the world No. 12, however, should not underestimate the China-born Hu Yun, who did well in the last two Opens in Malaysia and the Philippines.

The Malaysian, who left the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) last year, is hoping that a fine outing in Bangkok would boost his confidence ahead of the World Championships, which will be held in Hyderabad from Aug 10-16.

Choong Hann qualified for the world meet by staying in the top 16 in the world rankings.

It was, however, a day of mixed fortunes for two World Championships-bound men’s doubles pairs – Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah and Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choong Eng – in yesterday’s second round.

Independent players Tan Fook-Wan Wah made it to the quarter-finals after a convincing 21-17, 21-15 win over Indonesians Riky Widianto-Kimang Sandy wijaya.

They will take on South Koreans Chung Eui-seok-Kim Ki-jung for a place in the semi-finals. But it was the end of the road for Chong Ming-Choon Eng after crashing 18-21, 21-17, 19-21 to their younger compatriots Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah.

Peng Soon-Khim Wah will face Thailand’s Patapol Ngernsrisuk-Sudket Prapakamol next.

There was also a surprise win for Malaysia’s other doubles pair – Goh Wei Shem-Vountus Indra Mawan – when they knocked out seventh seeds Jang Sung-ho-Shin Baek-cheol of South Korea to reach their first quarter-finals in an Open tournament.
