PETALING JAYA: She may be down and out in the Asian Junior Championships, but doubles player Ng Hui Ern believes she has still a lot more to give.
Yesterday, Hui Ern and Lai Pei Jing lost to China’s Xia Huan-Tang Jinhua 25-23, 15-21, 15-21 in the semi-finals.
But the Malaysians can be proud of their display as they had only been paired up a few days before the tournament began.
“My regular partner, Ong Boon Hui, was injured early this year and I haven’t had a specific partner since,” said Hui Ern, who is the younger sister of senior mixed doubles ace Ng Hui Lin.
The 18-year-old Hui Ern took up badminton when she was nine and has not looked back since.
The Bukit Jalil Sports School student was quite impressive last year, finishing third in the Commonwealth Youth Games in India and the Asian School Games in the Philippines.
“I hope to break into the senior back-up squad soon. This year marks my last outing in the junior meet and I am looking forward to a higher level of challenge,” she said.
Hui Ern and Pei Jing deserve praise for having performed creditably in the junior meet.
They even defeated top seeds Nguyen Thi Sen-Vu Thi Trang of Vietnam 21-11, 17-21, 21-17 in the quarter-finals.
And Hui Ern’s form has earned praise from her sister Hui Lin.
“I think she has improved a lot this year.
“She played a good game against the Vietnamese,” said Hui Lin.
