Humble beginning pushes Ary to make the grade

KUALA LUMPUR: Indonesia’s top junior boys’ singles shuttler Ary Trisnanto sold his study table to purchase his first racquet eight years ago.
The humble beginning and the hardship he endured have made the 18-year-old tougher and more determined to make the grade.
“Times were tough when I decided to be a player when I was 10. My father had saved some money but it was not enough to buy a racquet,” recalled Ary.
“I suggested we sell the study table and he agreed to it.
“The journey has been tough thus far but I am determined to work hard to fulfil my dream of becoming a world and Olympic champion.”
Ary is now one of the top three juniors under the charge of former international Ronny Agustinus in the national centre at Cipayung in Jakarta.
The others are Evert Sukamta and Hermanshah. The other junior, Marcus Fernaldi Gideon, does not train at the centre. And all four are here for the Asian junior championships.
Ary, who joined the centre three months ago, said that he was determined to come good in his first and last Asian junior championships.
“I finally get to compete in the Asian Juniors. There is very strong competition among players in Indonesia and representing the country itself is an achievement,” he said.
“Our chances are better in the individual than in the mixed team event. I did not get as many opportunities as the others to travel abroad for tournaments but I hope that there will be good times for me in the Asian junior individual competition (beginning tomorrow).”
Ary has three role models — countryman Taufik Hidayat, China’s Lin Dan and Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei.
“I like Taufik for his techniques; Lin Dan for his power; and I look up to Chong Wei for his speed. I hope to have the best of all these three elements so that I can become a great player,” he said.
On his aspiration in his last year as a junior player, Ary said: “I hope to be the Asian junior champion. I know that Iskandar (Zulkarnain Zainuddin of Malaysia) is one of the favourites but I will give it my best shot.”
Ary and his Indonesian team’s challenge in the mixed team competition ended in the quarter-finals yesterday. They were beaten 0-3 by defending champions and top seed China.
