No tournaments for the four back-up shuttlers

KUALA LUMPUR: The four elite back-up shuttlers under the charge of newly-appointed singles coach Hendrawan can expect no tournaments for the next two months.

The Indonesian said yesterday that participation in tournaments was not the main objective for Tan Chun Seang, Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Chong Wei Feng and Liew Daren.

“I have not discussed their participation in tournaments with (singles chief coach) Rashid Sidek. But I prefer to spend the next two months on brushing up their skills before they set their sights on competitions,” he said.

“There are many areas they can still improve on, if you are talking about competing at the top level. It’s going to be a lot of hard work in the next two to three months to push the back-up players to improve their game.”

Hendrawan hopes that he would be given time to work on raising the standard of the players.

“It takes longer to see results and I hope everyone, including the press, understands this,” he said.

His long-term objective is to see at least one back-up player gaining qualification for the 2012 London Olympics.
