SCG Thailand Open 2009 - Top seeds progress

Malaysia’s veteran shuttlers Wong Choong Hann and men's doubles Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah remained on course in the SCG Thailand Open 2009 with morale boosting wins ahead of the World Championships to reach the semi-finals in Bangkok on Friday.

Choong Hann, the top seed, had a relatively tough time before disposing Philippines Open runner-up Hu Yun of Hong Kong 21-13, 21-19 in 37 minutes to set up a semi-final showdown with local hope Boonsak Ponsana on Saturday. The Thai beat Hong Kong’s Chan Yun Lung 21-4, 21-12.

In the men’s doubles, 2009 YONEX India Open champions Tan Fook-Wan Wah also made light work of Korea’s Chung Eui Seok-Kim Ki Jung 21-13, 21-6 to set up a date with Thais Isara Bodin-Jongjit Maneepong.

There was further good news for the Nalaysian camp when the pair of Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah, who stunned No 2 seeds Chan Chong Ming-Chew Chun Eng in the round of 16, continued their impressive run with an emphatic win over Thailand’s Sudket Prapakamol-Pataphol Ngernsrisuk 21-18, 21-12.
For their hard work, the Malaysians were rewarded with a match against Indonesia’s Alvent Yulianto-Hendra Gunawan. The Indonesians stopped an all-Malaysia semi-final by beating Goh Wei Shem-Vountus Indra Mawan 21-12, 21-15.
In the women’s singles, it will be a battle between Thailand and China with No 3 seed Salakjit Ponsana taking on Liu Jian while Nitchaon Jindapol squaring off against Wang Rong.
Salakjit beat Singapore’s Zhang Beiwen 21-16, 19-21, 21-19, Nitchaon beat China’s Chen Jiayuan 21-15, 21-11 while Liu and Wang beat Sapsiree Taerattanachai (Thailand) and Bae Seung Hae (Korea) 21-15, 21-19 and 21-17, 22-20 respectively.
Malaysia’s Peng Soon also made an impact with Goh Liu Ying in the mixed doubles when they defeated Thailand's Patiphat Chalardchalaem-Savitree Amitrapai 16-21, 21-17, 21-9. They will play Songphon Anugritayawon-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul of Thailand for a place in the final.

Thailand, however, exacted some revenge when Songphon Anugritayawon-Kunchala Voravichitchaikul beat Malaysia’s Khim Wah Amelia Anscelly 21-12, 17-21, 21-19 to book their place in the last four.
The other mixed doubles semi-finalists are top seeds Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam and Korea’s Shin Baek Cheol-Yoo Hyun Young.
