BWF Takes Cautionary Measures

The Championship medical team at the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Championships took precautionary measures last night and isolated a coach attending the Championships.

The coach who reported a sore throat and a mild fever, was assessed by the medical team, and under local health guidelines, was taken to a local hospital for tests and observation.

“The measures taken to date are precautionary and are standard practice for people presenting with flu like symptoms” said the district medical and health officer Dr C.H. Jaya Kumari.

The coach’s condition has improved overnight and is awaiting the results of the tests within 48 hours. The coach is only receiving general treatment for flu-like symptoms. At this time there is no confirmed diagnosis and the presenting symptoms indicated that the likelihood of this being H1N1 is small.

The championship medical team has been liaising closely with local health authorities and has sought expert advice on implementing any preventative measures.

A number of preventative medical services have been put in place at the host hotels which include regular monitoring of temperatures and personal hygiene advice.

“The preventative medical services put in place will ensure appropriate monitoring for players and team managers, provide information on personal hygiene and reduce the risk of transmission” Dr C.H. Jaya Kumari added.

Local medical authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
