SHUTTLERS Lin Dan and Chen Jin were singing praises of their young and old Indonesian opponents after making it an all-China affair in the men’s singles event at the World Championships yesterday.
Yesterday, Lin Dan was drenched with sweat for the first time in the tournament when he had to fend off a resilient and patient Sony Dwi Kuncoro of Indonesia for a 14-21, 21-13, 21-15 win.
It was the first time that Lin Dan had dropped a game in the tournament.
Lin Dan said that the newly-married Sony had matured and shown more precision in his game.
“I did not as play as well as yesterday (on his win over Peter-Gade Christensen of Denmark). I got frustrated with Sony’s patient game,” said Lin Dan.
“I knew the way he played (after watching Sony outplayed Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia). I knew he was fast and he waits for the right opportunity to attack.”
On the final against compatriot Chen Jin today, he said: “The most important thing is that the men’s singles title will go to China. After the Olympic Games, I have learnt to accept that victory and defeat is part and parcel of the game. I am prepared for any outcome.”
Sony, who got married last month, said yesterday game was his best performance for this year.
“Lin Dan is a smart player. In the decider, he slowed down the game and when no one expected it, he comes charging back. I am happy that I took a game from him,” said Sony.
“It has been a good competition for me. Now, I can happily tell my wife that I did not lose in the first round.
“Overall, I am satisfied although I am unable to make it to the final again. I hope to build on it from here,” added the 2007 World Championships runner-up.
Chen Jin, who blew away Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia 21-16, 21-6 in a lop-sided semi-finals, also had good things to say about his opponent.
“I really admire the way he plays. I wish I can speak his language as I will certainly want to talk to him,” said Chen Jin.
On his match against Lin Dan: “He is the better player. I have set no high hopes. I will be happy to give a good fight.”
