World No 1 Lee Chong Wei, still reeling from his shock quarter-final exit at the World Championships last week, captured the men’s singles title at the Macau Open with a straight games win over compatriot Wong Choong Hann.
Both Choong Hann and Choong-Lee have quit the Malaysian national team but still compete regularly on the international scene, thanks to their personal sponsors.
The men’s doubles final was a littered with unforced errors with both pairs guilty of several silly mistakes. However, Koo-Tan, the World No 2, were sharper and took their chances well at the crucial stages to nail the title.
In the men’s singles, Choong Hann put up a strong fight against Chong Wei but the latter’s superior fitness and age advantage proved to be decisive factors.
Chong Wei showed great court coverage and his ability to switch from defence into attack mode caught Choong Hann off guard on several occasions.

In another all-China final, Wang Yihan needed almost one hour to stop Jiang Yanjioa 16-21, 22-20, 21-12 to win the women’s singles crown.
Both players were a spent force in the third game but Wang Yihan showed more anticipation in the third game to block Jiang’s cross court drops and smashes to move in front.
And on several occasions, it was Wang Yihan who used her cross court net shots to leave Jiang rooted to the spot.
