KUALA LUMPUR: National singles coach Misbun Sidek has warned his players not to fall prey to China’s age-old tactic of making other players feel insignificant.
“Our job in training the players for the world meet is over. Now, the psychological war begins,” said Misbun before leaving with the team yesterday.
“How a player copes with it can make or break him or her.”
The World Championships will begin in Hyderabad, India, on Monday.
China usually have the biggest representation in the world meet and their shuttlers rarely mix with the other players.
“I hope our players will not be intimidated by them,” said Misbun.
China won three titles at the last world meet in Kuala Lumpur in 2007 and will be seeking to repeat that feat.
Their best bets for medals are men’s singles ace Lin Dan and any of their women in the singles and doubles events.
Misbun, while happy with the commitment shown by Lee Chong Wei, Wong Mew Choo, was full of praises for Lydia Cheah.
“Chong Wei has a good chance this year although China will have three singles players – Lin Dan, Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai,” said Misbun.
“It will be tougher for Mew Choo. But she has been showing good spirit in training. Lydia has shown more maturity in her game and, hopefully, we will see more consistency from her.”
