Yong-dae wants to win world tiltle this time around

SOUTH Korean badminton star Lee Yong-dae is not a player who likes to be the second best.

And he is determined to play his cards right this time with Jung Jae-sung to win the world championships men’s doubles title. They are certainly the biggest threat to Malaysian second seeds Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who are in the same half of the draw.

At the last championships in Kuala Lumpur, Yong-dae-Jae-sung were beaten in the final by Indonesians Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan.

Victory then would have meant that Yong-dae had three major titles under his belt even before he turned 20.

Yong-dae won the 2008 All-England title with Jae-sung and the 2008 Beijing Olympic mixed doubles gold medal with Lee Hyo-jung.

“There are a lot of expectations on us at home (to win the men’s doubles title). And this has further motivated to get our hands on it this time,” he said.

Yong-dae added that although they were the fourth seeds, they stood a good chance to make the final.

“The draw is quite favourable to us. If all goes well, we should be there in the final,” he said.

A world title will place Yong-dae in his own league and this is something he wants to achieve.

“By the next Olympics (in London in 2012), I hope that I can win all the major titles in the world,” he said.

Another major title that he has not won is in the Asian Games.

Barring any upsets, Yong-dae-Jae-sung will play against Kien Keat-Boon Heong in the semi-finals. Even if Yong-dae muffs the chance in the men’s doubles, he can get it right in the mixed doubles with Hyo-jung.
