BWF looking at four Grand Slams to raise status of Super Series

CHANGZHOU: The Badminton World Federation (BWF) are considering the introduction of four Grand Slam tournaments, just like in tennis, to elevate the status of their Super Series circuit.
Their deputy president, Paisan Rangsikitpho, said yesterday that the four Grand Slams would come from among the 12 Super Series tournaments but they would offer bigger prize money.
He added that the All-England would be one of those tournaments to be considered for inclusion as a Grand Slam event.
Paisan also said that they might revert the world championships, which are now held annually except in the Olympic year, to a biennial affair.
“Many member countries have expressed their opinion that the players lack the motivation to play in the championships under the current format,” he said.
“But we cannot change that until the next Olympic Games in London (in 2012).
“The job to host the 2010 and 2011 championships had already been awarded to Paris and London.”
