YONEX-SUNRISE BWF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 - Team draw completed

Defending champions China were drawn with Indonesia while No 2 seeds and hosts Malaysia were given a tricky path to the final after they drew Japan and Singapore in Group Z of the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Junior Team Championship 2009 which gets underway in Alor Setar, Kedah on 23 October.

A total of 22 teams will compete in the tournament which is known as the Suhandinata Cup. The team event will be followed by the individual championships at the same venue beginning 28 October.

India, the joint 3-4 seeds, were placed in sub-group Y11 while Thailand were drawn in sub-group X11 (see chart below). The 22 teams will be divided into four groups W, X, Y and Z. However, for groups X and Y, it is further divided to two sub-groups each of three teams in each sub-group. Group W and Z will have five teams each.

The draw for the Suhandinata Cup was conducted in Alor Setar on Wednesday witnessed by Badminton World Federation council member Datuk Lim Teong Keat and tournament referee Chua Soo Hock.

Also present at the draw were Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) general manager Kenny Goh, Kedah Badminton Association (KBA) president Teoh Teng Chor, F&N Coca Cola National Corporate Affairs manager Datuk Kamal Harun, Kedah Sports Council director Syed Khairul Annuar Syed Abiddin and other BAM and KBA officials.

The 10-day tournament is being organised in the northern state of Kedah in Malaysia. Last year, China finished as champions followed by Korea, Malaysia and India. Korea, however, are not competing in the team event this year.

Besides China and Indonesia, the other teams in Group W are Russia, New Zealand and Macau while France and Cambodia will join hosts Malaysia in Group Z.

The winners of each group will qualify for the semi-finals while the other eams will be involved in play-offs for the other ranking positions. The winner of sub-group X1 and sub-group X2 will play each other to decide the champion for Group X. The process will be the same for the teams in Group Y.

Groups:

Group W: China, Indonesia, Russia, New Zealand, Macau.

Group X: Sub-Group X1: Thailand, Germany, Vietnam; Sub-Group X2: Hong Kong, Denmark, Sri Lanka.

Group Y: Sub-Group Y1: India, Canada, Philippines; Sub-GroupY2: Chinese Taipei, England, Australia.

Group Z: Malaysia, Japan, France, Singapore, Cambodia.
