Kah Ming-Hui Ern storm into the third round

OF ALL the mixed doubles partnerships tested out by Malaysia during the mixed team event of the world junior championships, Chooi Kah Ming-Ng Hui Ern were the most effective.

The pair were retained for the individual competition and they proved their worth yesterday by blitzing into the third round.

Unlike the other three pairs, who were handed first-round byes, Kah Ming-Hui Ern played two matches. They thrashed Chi Leong Lam-Pek San Ieong of Macau 21-8, 21-4 in the morning and knocked out Taiwan’s Chang Kai-liang-Kao Hua in the evening, winning the second-round match 21-11, 21-13.

“It has been so far so good for us in the competition. Although we just teamed up here, our communication on the court is still good as I have partnered Kah Ming regularly in the past,” said Hui Ern.

Kah Ming-Hui Ern face a big test in the form of third-fourth seeds Jongjit Maneepong-Rodjana Chuthabunditkul of Thailand today for a place in the quarter-finals.

“We will start as the underdogs against the Thais,” said Hui Ern, who is the younger sister of former world junior mixed doubles champion, Hui Lin.

“They are well known in the junior scene and they have been playing together for a long time. We have not been set a target in this competition, so we want to just go out there and perform our best.”

Tan Wee Tat-Shevon Lai Jamie, Yew Hong Kheng-Ong Boon Hui and Ow Yao Han-Lai Pei Jing also won their second-round matches yesterday.

Wee Tat-Shevon defeated Marin Baumann-Audrey Fontaine of France 21-15, 21-10 while Yao Han-Pei Jing downed Singaporeans Tang Kirt Soon-Noriko Goh 21-11, 21-12.

Hong Kheng-Boon Hui went the full distance before prevailing 14-21, 21-18, 23-21 against Germans Andreas Heinz-Fabianne Deprez.

In the boys doubles, Goh Jian Hao-Pang Zheng Lin made it to the second round with a 21-15, 21-15 win in 18 minutes over New Zealanders Danny Oud-Praveen Tayalan. They will take on Japan’s Kento Momota-Naoto Otaki today.

The other Malaysian boys’ pair, Ow Yao Han-Chooi Kah Ming, were not in action yesterday. They begin their campaign in the second round today against Chi Leong Lam-Meng Fai Lei of Macau.

In the girls’ doubles, Shevon-Boon Hui played well below their best but it was still enough to defeat Sri Lanka’s Sushmita Illangakoon-Oshadi Kuruppu 22-20, 21-14.
