YONEX-SUNRISE BWF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 - Smooth sailing for seeds

All seeded players progressed smoothly to the second and third rounds of the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships for the Bimantara Cups with hosts Malaysia having all four mixed doubles pairs marching into the third round.

Several of the top seeds did not swing into action as they received byes but Day Two is expected to be an action-packed day with some interesting clashes thrown out by the draw. WJC-BC-D1-naoto-kanaoko

In the girl’s singles, Indonesia’s No 2 seed will be under a China onslaught as she has to negotiate a tough match against China No 2 Suo Di in the second round on Thursday morning.

A win will pit the Indonesia against another Chinese, either Deng Xuan or Yao Xue in the third round later in the evening. Both Febby and Suo Di received first round byes.

For hosts Malaysia, the mixed doubles pair of Ow Yao Han-Lai Pei Jing made the third round with an easy 21-11, 21-12 win over Singapore's Tang Kirt Soon-Noriko Goh in the second round. The Malaysians will take on Russians Dmitry Balandin-Elena Komendrovskaya in the third round.

Other Malaysian mixed doubles pair to progress were Chooi Kah Ming-Poon Lok Yan, who had an easy 21-8, 21-4 win over Macau's Lam Chi Leong-Leong Pek San and Chinese Taipei's Chang Kai Liang-Kao Hua 21-11, 21-13 respectively.

Yew Kheng Hong-Ong Boon Hui and Tan Wee Tat-Shevon Jemie Lai also made it through to the third round.

Malaysia’s winning run continued in the girl’s singles with Sonia Cheah and Yang Li Lian scoring wins over Chen Chi Ya of Chinese Taipei (21-12, 21-4) and Philippines' top junior shuttler Ann Venice Alcala (15-21, 21-13, 21-17) respectively.

Sonia's second round opponent is Canada's Sarah Kong who beat Sri Lanka's W. Upuli Samanthika 11-21, 23-21, 21-13 where a win is likely to see her up against Japan's Sayaka Takahashi (seeded 9/16) who had a first round bye. Sayaka's second round opponent is Vietnam's Nguyen Thi Mai Anh.

India’s P. Thulasi, however, put a dent in Malaysia’s run when she stopped Florah Ng in straight games.

Thulasi, who hails from Kerala, was in good form, attacking her Malaysian opponent with powerful smashes to register a 21-13, 21-15 win. The Indian will take on Germany’s Inken Wienefeld in the second round.

The Bimantara Cup follows the Suhandinata Cup (team event) and ends this Sunday at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Kedah.
