Indonesia’s Febby Angguni, the No 2 seed, was shown the exit in the girl’s singles while Europe’s challenge for honours in the boy’s singles was left to just three players as Day 2 of the YONEX-SUNRISE BWF World Junior Championships 2009 came to an end.
Febby found the going tough in her match against China’s No 2 player, Suo Di, as the Indonesian fell to a 21-18, 17-21, 13-21 defeat after battling it out for almost one hour at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Kedah, Malaysia.
Suo Di, unseeded in the tournament, went on to beat teammate Deng Xuan 17-21, 21-13, 21-18 to book her place in the fourth round.
"My target was the semi-finals and it is disappointing to bow out so early in the tournament,” said Febby, a semi-finalist at this year’s Asian Junior Championships in Kuala Lumpur.
“But it is a valuable experience for me and I will work on improving my game for the future.”
Another upset in the girl’s singles saw Malaysia’s Sonia Cheah, also unseeded, scoring an emphatic win over 9-16th seed Sayaka Takahashi of Japan, winning in straight games 22-20, 21-16 in the third round.
In the second round played earlier in the morning, Sonia beat Canada's Sarah Kong 21-11, 21-15.
The Malaysian, however, has the tough task of playing China’s top seed Chen Xiaojia in the fourth round on Friday.
Malaysia’s Tee Jing Yi also made it through to the fourth round when he disposed Thailand’s Jindapol Nitchaon 21-14, 21-13 and will take on Hong Kong’s Tse Ying Suet for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the boy’s singles, all the seeded players progressed smoothly, with the exception of Malaysia’s 3-4th seed Muhammad Syawal Ismail who was beaten by Indonesia’s Andre Marteen 21-19, 18-21, 21-16.
Both Tian Houwei (China) and Iskandar Zulkarnain (Malaysia), the No 1 and 2 seeds respectively, checked into the last 16 with comfortable wins.
Houwei beat teammate Cheng Liu 21-17, 21-18 while Iskandar beat Singapore’s Gerald Ong 21-16, 21-11.
There was more cheer for the Malaysians when Misbun Ramdan, seeded 3/4 beat Indonesia's Ary Trisnanto of Indonesia 21-11, 21-23, 21-19 to earn a fourth round clash against Germany's Nikolaj Persson.
Besides Persson, Europe’s challenge in the boy’s singles will be carried by Danes Emil Holst and Fleming Quach. Holst beat Philippines’ Jefferson Vivas Paul 21-9, 21-11 while Quach upset Wales’ Jamie van Hooidjonk 21-15, 21-7.
