Hee Chun-Wee Kiong more concerned with success in National GP Finals

JOHOR BARU: Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong are the first choice men’s doubles pair for the Thomas Cup Finals in May.
The fight for the second men’s doubles slot in the Malaysian team, however, is still wide open.
But Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee Kiong are not too preoccupied with it.
They are more concerned with their performance in the on-going National Grand Prix Finals at the Bandaraya Stadium here.
Hee Chun, who partnered Teo Kok Siang to win the world junior doubles title in India in 2008, believes that Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif are still the favourites to be named the second pair in the Thomas Cup squad.
“I know that the second men’s doubles spot is still wide open. Although we are capable of taking it, I would prefer not to think too much about it,” said Hee Chun.
“I’d rather let the coaches decide on the matter while I continue to focus on the matters at hand and give my best in every competition.”
National No. 2 Fairuzizuan-Zakry suffered a first-round defeat at the Malaysian Open last month and that has jeopardised their place in the Thomas Cup squad.
That defeat has also seen the duo being left out of the team for the German Open (March 2-7) and All-England in Birmingham (March 9-14).
The other pair in the running for the Thomas Cup squad – Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah – suffered a blow on Thursday when they crashed out of the National GP after losing two of their group matches.
Hee Chun, however, prefers to keep things in perspective for now.
“They (Fairuzizuan-Zakry) are going through a bad patch now, but I think they can still make the cut for the Thomas Cup team,” said the 20-year-old Hee Chun.
“But if we are called up, it will be a major breakthrough for us.”
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong and Peng Soon-Khim Wah will have the German Open as the last platform to impress the coaches while Fairuzizuan-Zakry will compete in the Swiss Open from March 16-21.
