Hurul, Siti claim bronze in their first outing abroad

KUALA LUMPUR: Hurul Ainul Abdul Razak and Siti Shazwani broke the duck for Malaysia in the Asian Youth Championships with a bronze medal-winning effort in the girls’ doubles event in Kuwait yesterday.
Pitted against the powerhouses from South Korea, Japan and Singapore, the Malaysian duo went on the podium after chalking a total of 2,587 after six games each.
Singaporeans Bernice Lim-New Hui Fen took the gold medal on 2,889 while Koreans Kim Hyun-mi-Kim Yeon-ju took silver on 2,590.

Hurul Ainul and Siti, who are both playing in their first international championships, started out with a 429 to get into fourth place. They moved a rung up with scores of 408 and 465 in the next two games.
A huge 484 in the fourth game took them to second spot but a low 398 in the fifth bogged them down. A 403 effort in the final game saw them slipped to third place — just three pins behind the South Koreans.
“I am very happy to win this medal for the country and I dedicate it to my parents for their moral support they have always given to me,” said Hurul Ainul, who contributed a score of 1,328.
Siti, who had a total of 1,259, said: “I’m glad that we complemented each other well and finished with a medal.”
The other Malaysian pair, Hee Kar Yen-Jacqueline Jenelee Sijore, finished fifth with a total of 2,535.
Team manager Cheah Ban Cheang said that the bronze won yesterday was a bonus as they had not set a target to win a medal.
“The championships were for our bowlers to gain exposure and experience. I’m very proud of the performance from Hurul Ainul and Siti,” he said.
Competition continues today with the boys’ doubles event. The team event will begin tomorrow.
