PETALING JAYA: National back-up pair Mak Hee Chun-Tan Wee
Kiong have tough hurdles to clear in the main draw of the China Masters,
which begins in Changzhou today.
Hee Chun-Wee Kiong, who bagged the Johor Open title in July, have to beat South Korean fourth seeds Ko Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong to avoid an early round exit in the first Super Series tournament since the World Championships in Paris last month.
But the pair, who now train under Tan Kim Her, should have nothing to fear.
An upset win against the Swiss Open champions could earn them a place alongside world No. 1 Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong for the Guangzhou Asian Games in November.
World Championships silver medallists Kien Keat-Boon Heong are assured of a place but the second doubles slot is still open.
Tough hurdle:
Mak Hee Chun (left) and Tan Wee Kiong will face Swiss Open champions Ko
Sung-hyun-Yoo Yeon-seong of South Korea in the opening round of the
China Masters today.
Doubles head coach Rexy Mainaky is
looking at either Hee Chun-Wee Kiong or the newly paired up combination
of Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Hoon Thien How to complete the men’s doubles
line-up for Guangzhou.
However, Zakry-Thien How have only entered for the Japan Open next week and the advantage is clearly on Hee Chun-Wee Kiong as they will also be playing in Tokyo.
With world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei skipping the China Masters to recuperate from a back injury before the New Delhi Commonwealth Games next month, Malaysia’s interest in the China Masters lies in the men’s doubles.
Four national back-up pairs and three independent pairs will be on court today.
Former national pairs Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng and Gan Teik Chai-Tan Bin Shen are up against Korean pairs in the opening round. Chan Peng Soon-Lim Khim Wah too will be facing a Korean pair in the first round.
Goh Wei Shem-Teo Kok Siang and former national No. 1 Choong Tan Fook-Lee Wan Wah will take on Japanese pairs Rei Sato-Keigo Sonoda and Shohei Hoshino-Akira Kobayashi respectively.
The newly-formed pair of Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Ong Soon Hock have perhaps the toughest opening round hurdle as they will be up against World Championships semi-finalists and second seeds Guo Zhengdong-Chen Xu of China.
It will also be a good test ahead of the Commonwealth Games for doubles specialist Chin Eei Hui, who is partnering Goh Liu Ying in the women’s doubles for the first time.
Eei Hui’s regular partner Wong Pei Tty has been ruled out of the Commonwealth Games and the Asiad so as to allow her to recover fully from a career threatening knee injury.
Eei Hui-Liu Ying have a first round match against China’s Nan Qiao-Wu Qianqian.
There will be interesting first round match-ups for the top three Chinese men’s singles shuttlers – world champion Chen Jin, Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai – as they are all up against Korean opponents.
The match between Lin Dan and Park Sung-hwan takes top billing with the Olympic champion from China looking to avenge an unexpected quarter-final defeat by the Korean at the world meet in Paris last month.
Third seed Chen Jin faces Hong Ji-hoon while Bao Chunlai has a similarly tricky match against Shon Wan-ho.
