Injured Chong Wei told not to push himself in training

PETALING JAYA: A question mark hangs over the participation of world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei in the New Delhi Commonwealth Games next month as he races against time to get fit for the defence of the men’s singles title he won in Melbourne four years ago.
Chong Wei was back on court after a one-week break yesterday but he was only restricted to light training in order not to aggravate a back injury, which ended his bid to win the world championship title in Paris last month.
Chong Wei complained of pain in his back after the third-round match against England’s Rajiv Ouseph and the top seeded Malaysian was eliminated by Indonesian Taufik Hidayat in the quarter-finals the following day.
The National Sports Institute (NSI) have cautioned the shuttler to go easy on his training over the next two weeks to allow the injury to heal faster.
Singles chief coach Rashid Sidek said that Chong Wei’s participation in the Japan Open scheduled for Sept 22-27 and also the Commonwealth Games hung in the balance.
“We have submitted his entry for the Japan Open but we are also not sure whether he will be able to compete,” he said.
“If he continues to feel the pain during training because of the injury on his pelvic, we will probably not send him to Japan.
“The Commonwealth Games is an important event for the country and we hope that he will be fit to play by next month. The medical experts are doing their best to treat Chong Wei to help him recover well in time for the Games.”
Chong Wei, who has already withdrawn from the China Masters in Changzhou next week, is hoping that he will make a quick recovery.
“I want to recover fully and be ready to play in the Commonwealth Games and also in the Asian Games (in Guangzhou in November),” he said.
“The injury was not my excuse for losing in Paris. I had to take pain-killers to get on to the court to play against Taufik and was hoping to win the match.
“But as the match progressed, my body felt stiff. I normally play at a fast pace but not on that day and it’s still painful to me.
“My chances of winning gold in the Commonwealth Games are good and I hope for the best now from the treatment to enable me to compete.”
Chong Wei also spearheaded the mixed team to win the gold medal at the previous Games in Melbourne in 2006.
